Supang Chantavanich

Prof. Dr. Supang Chantavanich is the pioneer teacher who start and develop sociology curriculum of Chulalongkorn University both in undergraduate and graduate. She was the director of Institute of Asian Studies Chulalongkorn University and many of her academic works and researches are published nationally and internationally, especially, the study of migrant labor and social welfare.

Biography

Work Experiences

Prof. Dr. Supang Chantavanich graduated from Faculty of Arts (honor), Chulalongkorn University in 1969, then gained M.A. in Sociology (1972) and doctor’s degree in sociology from

University of Grenoble, France (1976).

She started to work with the government at Office of the Education Council, Prime Minister's Office, later in 1983, she was transferred to Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University. In 1987, she was appointed to Assistant Professor’s position and became Professor in 2000 and Professor C-11 in 2005.

Prof. Dr. Supang Chantavanich the pioneer teacher who start and develop sociology curriculum of Chulalongkorn University both in undergraduate and graduate. In 1989-1994, she became vice-director of Institute of Asian Studies Chulalongkorn University, then became the director during 1995-1999.

Many of her academic works and researches are published nationally and internationally. Especially, her study on migrant labor and social welfare. She was invited to be editor and editorial department of famous sociology journals in Thailand, region level and international. She works as the expert in evaluation of academic affairs in universities and state agencies. She received various rewards such as TRF Senior Research Scholar, Thailand Research Fund in 2001-2002, the reward of the great supporter of National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) in 2002, CU Most Outstanding Research Award, Chulalongkorn University in 2003 and National Outstanding Researchers in Sociology from National Research Council of Thailand in 2005.

However, after retired, Dr. Supang still dedicates her life as a lecturer, researcher and administrator. She is distinguished scholar of Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University from 1997 to present.
